Can We Make it to $30,000... Yes, We can! Shout out to all the DeCesaris / Prout Volunteers!
Tomorrow will mark the 11th year of the DeCesaris / Prout Cancer Foundation golf Tournament. Most folks don't know that the tournament generates about $100,000 of donations each year. That's a lot of money! And something else that a lot of people don't know is that JoAnn and Beth initially worked closely with the American Cancer Society (ACS), contributing all funds to this organization. After some time, they realized that they wanted to work in a more strategic manner to get funds to the heart of organizations that are on the cutting edge of cancer research and further still, they wanted every dollar to go to work. While the work of the ACS is unquestionably important and groundbreaking, the two founders realized that a significant portion of the donations to a big organization like ACS goes towards overhead. This is true of all large non-profits and is unavoidable. But for a smaller non-profit like DPCF that is volunteer driven, every dollar comes in and goes out with only very minimal deducted cost to run the operation like accounting and cost coverage of the expenses on the tournament. For that reason, the foundation has raised and will distribute over one million dollars in 12 years of operation.
The golf tournament takes months to organize and with the help of a loyal, hardworking volunteers (key words 'hardworking' and 'volunteers'), and hundreds of hours of preparation, they will once again launch this great event. It takes a very special group of people to do this year in and year out. They certainly don't do it for the money or recognition. These volunteers do it because it is important work and they hope that their efforts will make a difference, perhaps that one extra dollar collected will be the tipping point to finding a cure. I know that Beth and JoAnn are always grateful, but we all should tip our hats for their efforts. And of course, we should all be thankful that these two woman decided to put their heads together and drive this effort. Rest assured, that every dollar that you donate is working as hard as it possibly can.
I wish I could be there tomorrow, but I am happy that I can do a small part to help make what we all hope will make a big difference in the future. Thank you to all of the volunteers and Beth and JoAnn for doing such unselfish and immensely important work.
