Into Indiana! State Number Four Day 8, 80.5 Miles
Yesterday was my first rest day and it was nice to not have to pedal. I spent my day trying to resolve a couple bike issues and seeking out a good massage. I was able to find one, but it was a pretty far walk in 90 plus degrees. I figured that if I could bike 90 plus miles, I could walk three. In hindsight, I should have caught a cab. The walk was fine, but when I arrived I was so sweaty that I could tell that they were questioning whether they would take me or not. Fortunately, after a quick mopping up in the bathroom, I looked somewhat presentable and they took me back.
Today's ride was much the same as yesterday, with beautiful fields as far as the eye could see. There was a lurking heavy storm front all day and the wind took turns come at me from the front left, and at times was strongly at my back. The finish however was a killer, with wind for 2 miles straight in my face with some big climbs. I rode most of the day myself. There were several new riders today (5) who will go the distance to Boston. One rider from London was three days from the finish line last year and fell and broke his arm and leg. With determination, he is back to finish what he started. What a great story. I did the 80+ miles in 5 hours and 19 mins, with a dismal speed of just over 15mph. Finishing second for the day behind Chris on the recumbent bike. (that gives you an idea of how strong the winds were)
I forgot to mention that I spent some of my day making a special 'two-sided' flag for my bike! I wish I had Kathryn here to help me with it. I hope it will stay on until I get home.
Tomorrow, we go to Indianapolis.
